An external comprehensive review of the National Tuberculosis Programme was organized by the WHO/Europe in the Republic of Moldova from 4-15 February 2013. Twelve international and seven national experts participated, visiting 18 districts and three municipalities, the autonomous region of Gagauzia and the Transnistria region.

On November 22, 2013, the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) of the European Medicine Agency (EMA) has recommended the granting of a conditional marketing authorisation for delamanid, a new therapeutic agent, as part of an appropriate combination regimen for pulmonary multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) in adult patients when an effective treatment regimen cannot otherwise be composed for reasons of resistance or tolerability. Several national regulatory authorities are in the process of evaluating this compound.

The highest rate of multidrug- and extensively drug-resistant (M/XDR-TB) cases of tuberculosis is found in the WHO European Region. To emphasize the critical nature of access to anti-TB medicines in the treatment of M/XDR-TB, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)- funded Systems for Improved Access to Pharmaceuticals and Services (SIAPS), implemented by Management Sciences for Health, the World Health Organization and Stop TB partners will jointly host the 1st Conference on Pharmaceutical Management for TB and M/XDR-TB for the WHO European Region. The Conference will take place in Antalya, Turkey, on 10-13 December 2013.
