On World TB Day, The International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union) released its March newsletter focused on TB.

At a press conference held in Guadalajara, Mexico, today (16 March), the 48^th Union World Conference on Lung Health was officially launched, just ahead of World TB Day on 24 March.

The International Journal of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (IJTLD) is the official publication of the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union).

Submissions are now open for Encuentro, a dedicated space for community involvement and grassroots activism within the 48th Union World Conference on Lung Health. The deadline for submission is 5 May 2017.

The Childhood TB Learning Portal offers free interactive online courses in multiple languages including The Union's Childhood TB for Healthcare Workers and the recently developed Childhood MDR-TB for Healthcare Workers, as well as a comprehensive toolbox of childhood TB resources, including those developed in collaboration with the World Health Organization and other stakeholders in tuberculosis control and child health.

Civil society members are invited to fill out a short survey to provide feedback to the Union on how to better engage with civil society.

The Union offers a limited number of scholarships for individuals affected by lung disease, invited symposia speakers, authors of accepted abstracts and community volunteers.

Paris, France, 19 January 2017– Drug-resistant TB is one of the most terrible diseases that any person can ever face. Even when treatment is effective, it is long and very difficult. The health system must do everything in its power to provide access to effective treatments for every patient, with the appropriate treatment depending on the drug susceptibility profile involved in each case. It is essential that drug-sensitivity testing be performed at the outset, so that healthcare workers and patients know which medicines are likely to be effective in treatment and which will not be effective due to resistance. People living with drug-resistant TB should receive only those TB medicines that are likely to be effective in the case of that patient, and they must be treated with multiple medicines, at the same time, to which the TB is susceptible—a treatment approach known as “combination therapy”.
