THE HAGUE, Netherlands, October 25, 2018 – Children – especially very young children – are at high risk of developing severe tuberculosis illness when exposed to a member of their household who has active disease, but only 23 percent of child contacts of adults with active disease are provided with TB preventive therapy, researchers said here. That leaves 1.3 million children under the age of five who are eligible for isoniazid preventive therapy without access to the intervention that would prevent illness, according to the World Health Organization. Preliminary results from a study released here show how that can change.

The World Health Organization has just issued updated WHO guidelines on TB infection prevention and control. These guidelines outline a new evidence-based framework that promotes the implementation of an integrated package of Infection Prevention & Control (IPC) interventions based on administrative, engineering, and respiratory protection controls. This will contribute to cutting transmission and reducing the burden of TB illness and death to reach the global targets of the End TB Strategy and the political declaration of the UN High Level meeting on TB.

One-month regimen noninferior for preventing HIV-related TB (post)

For HIV-infected patients, a one-month regimen of rifapentine and isoniazid is noninferior to nine months of isoniazid alone for preventing tuberculosis, according to a study published in the March 14 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.
