Amsterdam, The Netherlands (July 23, 2018) — In preparation for the first ever United Nation’s High-Level Meeting (UNHLM) on tuberculosis (TB), to be held September 26, in New York, advocates are calling on the HIV/AIDS community to use the 22nd International AIDS Conference to draw attention to the deadly link between TB and HIV. The conference, which runs from July 23 to 27, is the last major gathering of both the TB and HIV advocacy communities before the highly anticipated UNHLM on TB. Scores of delegates from across the world are here for the conference.

The first ever phase III trials for multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) finally yielded results. Treatment Action Group (TAG), ACTION, and the Drug-Resistant TB Treatment Scale-up Action Team (DR-TB STAT) presented the results in a webinar held on 12 December 2017. The webinar explored implications for the field, from the delamanid C213 trial and the STREAM trial to evaluate the shorter regimen for MDR-TB.

A new research report from ACTION shows that while countries have taken steps in the right direction since 2014 to combat the deadly duo of TB and HIV, policy improvements have not all translated into changes at the facility level. Moreover, the burden to carry out TB-HIV activities still falls heavily on under-resourced TB programs.
