Registration open: Apply now to join the second UN High-Level Meeting on TB

The United Nations General Assembly will hold the second High-Level Meeting on the Fight Against Tuberculosis on 22 September 2023. The theme of the meeting is: “Advancing science, finance and innovation, and their benefits, to urgently end the global tuberculosis epidemic, in particular, by ensuring equitable access to prevention, testing, treatment and care.”

The President of the UN General Assembly has announced that the application process for special accreditation for the High-Level Meeting on Fight Against Tuberculosis (TB) is now open. The deadline for registration is: 19 June 2023 at 23:59 [EDT].

Registration process:  The application for special accreditation for the UN High-Level Meeting on TB is open. In order to participate in the high-level event, the following categories of relevant organizations that are not in consultative status with ECOSOC must express interest and must apply for special accreditation. It applies to 1) Non-governmental organizations ; 2) Civil society organizations ; 3) Academic institutions and 4) Private sector. We urge all the relevant stakeholders to apply with urgency to participate in the UN High-Level Meeting on Fight Against TB. This will be important to secure US visas on time.

*  Stakeholder applications will be approved by UN Member States, in accordance with the relevant General Assembly Resolution. The name of the organization and country will be shared with the UN Member States, and other information, including but not limited to the homepage.

About the UN High Level Meeting on TB

The UN High-Level Meeting is aimed to undertake a comprehensive review on the achievement of agreed tuberculosis goals at national, regional and global levels in the 2018 Political Declaration, and to identify gaps and solutions to accelerate progress towards ending the tuberculosis epidemic by 2030.  

In preparation for the High-Level Meeting, Member States have requested the UN Secretary-General, with support of the World Health Organization, to develop a comprehensive and analytical report on progress achieved and challenges remaining in realizing tuberculosis goals within the context of achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including on the progress and implementation of the 2018 political declaration”. For more information please access the resolution here.

Format: The High-Level Meeting will be convened by the President of the General Assembly and will be held at United Nations Headquarters in New York on 22 September 2023 during the general debate of the Assembly at its seventy-eighth session. The meeting will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m, and consist of an opening segment, a plenary segment for general discussion, two multi-stakeholder panels and a brief closing segment.

Participants: The President of the General Assembly may invite parliamentarians, local governments, the heads or senior representatives of relevant United Nations entities, including the World Health Organization, and international financial institutions, development partners, civil society, populations and communities vulnerable to tuberculosis, the private sector, academia, medical and scientific associations, Indigenous Peoples, representative organizations of people living with, at risk of and affected by tuberculosis and HIV coinfection, of persons with disabilities and community organizations to serve as speakers on the panels, taking into account gender balance, level of development, geographical representation and the representation of youth and older persons.

Next steps in preparations towards the UN High-Level Meeting on TB

The World Health Organization is supporting the Office of the President of the General Assembly, and the UN Secretary-General, along with the Stop TB Partnership, Unitaid, Global Fund, and other key partners in preparing for an impactful High-Level Meeting, as mandated in United Nations General Assembly resolution A/RES/77/274.

UN Interactive Multistakeholder Hearing on TB, 8 May

The interactive Multistakeholder Hearing on TB was held on May 8, as part of the preparatory process for the second UN High-Level Meeting on the Fight Against TB. Over 600 registrants including representatives of civil society, parliamentarians, non-governmental organizations, academia, medical associations and the private sector, as well as people affected by TB and broader communities attended the event. The participants provided their vision and recommendations to members of the UN General Assembly for the High-Level Meeting, with a focus on the current state of efforts and top needs to accelerate response. 

The Hearing was organized by the Office of the President of the General Assembly, with the support of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Stop TB Partnership. Civil society including WHO’s Civil Society Taskforce on TB and other stakeholders contributed to preparation for an impactful High-Level Meeting. 

There were two other Hearings held on 9 May focused on UHC and PPR.
