The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria yesterday released the funding recommendations of its Technical Review Panel for the Transitional Funding Mechanism. This mechanism was established by the Global Fund in December 2011 as a means to protecting gains achieved and ensuring essential programmes were maintained following the cancellation of its 11th round of grants.

Grant proposals for tuberculosis (TB) received 25% (US$ 127.4 million) of all the approved funding (US$ 510 million) - a marked increase over the historic average share of 16% since the Global Fund was established in 2002. TB applications were also most successful, with an 86% recommendation rate; malaria applications engendered a 79% recommendation rate and HIV proposals a 62% recommendation rate. No single TB proposal received the lowest (outright negative) rating.

"We are deeply gratified that support to applicants by the WHO Stop TB Department, the Stop TB Partnership Secretariat and partners under the umbrella of TBTEAM helped produce these excellent results," said Dr Lucica Ditiu, Executive Secretary of the Stop TB Partnership.

Malaria programmes will receive the most funding (US$ 204.2 million), with 72% of these funds dedicated to bed net replacements. HIV grants will total US$ 179.3.
