The University of Cape Town's (UCT) head of Pulmonology division, Professor Keertan Dheda, says he is less optimistic about the cocktail of drugs for drug-resistance TB.

The PaMZ three-drug combo from the Global Alliance for TB Drug Development is said to cure the disease more quickly than current regimens.

Speaking on Morning Live, Dheda says in South Africa MDR-TB is still a huge problem.

Dheda says, "One of  the drugs used in this new TB cocktail doesn’t have standardised reliable tests to evaluate…status of the drug."

The professor says it will be difficult for the drug to be administered to all TB patients.

However, the Global Alliance for TB Drug Development said that PaMZ regimen shows promise to be effective in all (100%) of drug-sensitive patients and about 30% of patients with MDR-TB.
