Regular screening for TB in Inuit communities is cost-effective

Montreal, November 1st, 2021 - Regular community-wide screening for active and latent tuberculosis (TB) appears to be cost-effective in Inuit communities with high TB rates and is recommended to help reduce outbreaks, according to new research published today in CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal). The study was led by Dr. Kevin Schwartzman, Director of the Division of Respiratory Medicine at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) and Senior Scientist in the Translational Research in Respiratory Diseases Program at the Research Institute of the MUHC (RI-MUHC).

Complete makeover in fight of multidrug-resistant TB

Montreal, – Several new medicines have been found to be more effective than traditional ones used to treat multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB), according to a new international collaborative study led by Dr. Dick Menzies, senior scientist at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) in Montreal. These findings precipitated a complete overhaul of worldwide TB treatment guidelines, with the results of this work published today in the British medical journal The Lancet.
