The Union and international partners are exploring whether the detection and control of tuberculosis (TB) can be improved using the “7-1-7” metric.

Public Health Action is the free access, online journal of The International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease. The journal focuses on TB, lung health, non-communicable diseases and related public health issues.

The course, launched today (October 31) during a press conference on TB prevention, is entitled Prevent Tuberculosis: Management of TB Infection. The completely open access and online training programme is geared towards national TB and AIDS programme staff and clinicians, including paediatricians, pneumologists, general practice physicians, clinical officers, nurses and paramedical staff, and other health care workers involved in TB services.

The International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union) released its February newsletter, presenting the initiatives and activities carried out during the month, including a message from the Executive Director José Luis Castro on a human-rights-led approach to TB, and the recording of the webinar, Debate on the future of treatment for drug-resistant TB. It also contains information about upcoming events.

Research published today (August 10) identifies a critical missed opportunity in current TB, HIV and TB-HIV programmes. Smoking and exposure to second-hand smoke are known to exacerbate these diseases, but evidence-based strategies to reduce tobacco use are not yet routinely included in treatment programmes. The paper, published in The International Journal of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease, makes the case that addressing tobacco use, as a modifiable risk factor common to both diseases, would improve TB and HIV outcomes and care.

The Union is offering a limited number of travel grants and/or conference registrations to attend the 46th Union World Conference on Lung Health in Cape Town. The deadline for online application is 7 September.

Two late-breaker sessions will be held at the 46^th World Conference on Lung Health in Cape Town on 2-6 December 2015. Researchers are invited to submit abstracts for these sessions by 31 July 2015, following the guidelines provided.
