Documents: SADC on TB integration, cross-border referrals
Released at a March regional meeting on tuberculosis in southern Africa's mines, these documents cover TB treatment harmonization, compensation and the economic benefits of regular TB screening of mining communities.
At the 25 March event, South Africa, Lesotho, Mozambique, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania and Namibia agreed to pursue regional harmonisation of TB treatment protocols as well as establishing common systems for cross-border referrals and patient tracking.
As part of this, countries will aspire to establish a regional database of TB patients and conduct contact tracing and outreach among mining communities.
The following documents detail:
- Benefits and compensation provided to miners under South Africa law;
- A World Bank analysis of the costs of TB in the mines and the economic benefit of increased screening among miners, and mining and labour-sending communities;
- A report outlining preliminary moves to harmonise TB treatment.
