WHO Europe survey on MDR TB Action Plan Best Practices - please participate!

Dear Colleagues,

In September 2011, with your support and commitment, the Consolidated Action Plan to Prevent and Combat Multidrug- and Extensively Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis in the WHO European Region, 2011–2015 and its accompanying resolution EUR/R61/R7 were endorsed at the sixty-first session of the Regional Committee in Baku, Azerbaijan. As we approach two years since endorsement of the Consolidated Action Plan by all 53 Member States of WHO European Region, much progress has been made. However, critical challenges also remain. For example, the treatment success rate of multidrug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) is still far below its target.

In order to improve the transfer of knowledge between countries, which is very useful in formulating health strategies at both national and regional levels, the WHO Regional Office for Europe is developing “A Compendium of Best Practices in M/XDR-TB Control and Treatment in the European Region”. The published compendium will be presented at the sixty-third session of the WHO Regional Committee for Europe, in Izmir, Turkey on 16–19 September 2013. A preliminary report will also be presented at the National Tuberculosis Programme Managers’ Meeting and Wolfheze Workshop on 29-31 May 2013 in The Hague, Netherlands.

We enthusiastically invite you to submit any good practice that is successfully carried out in the country where you conduct TB-related work, that can be useful in providing a lesson learned in preventing and controlling M/XDR-TB (including efforts to address barriers or bottlenecks in TB control). Additional information and form for electronic submission can be found at the link: http://www.euro.who.int/en/MXDRTB_BestPractices.

Even if you do not have any best practices to submit at this time, we kindly request that you access the link above, provide your contact details and answer to question 1 so that we may have a record of your response. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Ms. Colleen Acosta at tuberculosis@euro.who.int
