Global health coalition urges G20 pledge on pandemics and neglected diseases

Sign on to a Call to Action urging G20 to provide leadership in combating pandemics, drug resistance, and major poverty-related and neglected diseases.

In an increasingly interconnected world where diseases cross borders with ease, we must all work together to ensure we have the technologies and systems in place to prevent the next global health crisis which could have a devastating health and economic impact.

That’s why the Global Health Technologies Coalition, in partnership with a coalition of other global health organizations, is calling on G20 leaders to make global health innovation a priority on the G20 agenda and commit investment in research, innovation, and development of innovative health technologies to counter threats posed by antimicrobial resistance (AMR), poverty-related and neglected diseases (PRNDs), and pandemics.

Тhe Global Health Technologies Coalition invites all those who share this vision to add their signature to the coalition’s online Call to Action petition.

This Call to Action specifically calls for G20 leaders to take the following actions:

1. Provide political support to address the inter-related issues of AMR, pandemic preparedness/response, and PRNDs.
2. Increase financial support and its coordination across the G20 and partner countries to ensure sustainable, long-term funding for global health innovation, with a focus on AMR, pandemic preparedness/response, and PRNDs.
3. Encourage businesses, philanthropic organizations, and other financing institutions from the G20 to increase investment in global health innovation, in the interrelated areas of AMR, pandemic preparedness/response, and PRNDs.
4. Mobilize G20 public health and scientific expertise to address AMR in both neglected and major poverty diseases by supporting global efforts to develop new tools and approaches to address AMR, assisting low- and middle-income G20 partner nations in building innovation capacity, and promoting open data sharing to help technology transfers and strengthen research capacity.

The risk of resistance and emerging infectious diseases, combined with increased transnational mobility, poses a major challenge for the global health community. Innovative technologies are essential components of control, elimination, and eradication strategies, but developing these technologies takes long-term political and economic commitment.

Through sustained leadership and financial commitment from G20 leaders in combatting neglected diseases and AMR, we can protect against pandemics, reduce global burden of disease, lift millions out of poverty, and avert billions of dollars of economic and social costs.
