South Africa trails BRICS partners in battle against TB
The World Health Organisation’s 2016 TB report, released last week, has revealed that despite a decrease in the numbers of infection rate over the years, South Africa still has the highest number of estimated TB incidences per 100 000 people.
TB, a bacterial infection which generally affects the lungs, is one of the top 10 causes of death worldwide and also remains a leading cause of death in South Africa.
SABC analysed the data released last week and it shows that the TB infection rate in South Africa is double the infection rates of the other BRICS countries combined - at 48% of the total rates; when compared with India, Russia, China or Brazil, South Africa also has the highest number of incidences.
