Tuberculosis seen on the rise in Hungary
Cases of tuberculosis are on the rise not just in the developing world but also in Hungary.
For the first time since 1995, the number of Hungarian infected with the disease rose, rising from 1,120 cases in 2009 to 1256 cases in 2010. Exact figures for 2011 will only be available at the end of the month.
According to the National Korányi Tuberculosis and Pulmonology Institute, the reasons for the rise in cases in Hungary are most likely due the fall in living standards among the poor. Most of the infected are between the ages of 50 and 60 and can be found in Budapest or northeast Hungary. Alcoholics and the homeless are the most at risk of catching the disease.
